Let the festivities begin

On Friday I swore off watching basketball for about an hour, only to get sucked into March Madness all over again. Okay, so IU is playing in the NIT (Wednesday night at 8:00 pm vs Vanderbilt) and is looking on the outside while Iowa played their way into the Tournament with a win over Michigan State and near-win over Wisconsin (can a team win more buzzer-beaters in a season?).

Now that the Tournament field is set, I'll be pouring over stats and trends for the next couple of days to make my picks (which usually end of wrong, but it is fun anyway). On first glance, I have Illinois, Gonzaga, UCONN and Duke in the Final Four. Right now, I'm picking UCONN and Illinois in the Championship, with UCONN to repeat. This will probably change by Wednesday night though.

The NIT looks very interesting this year. I like how IU and Maryland are on opposite sides of the bracket. I'd love to see an IU-Maryland rematch of the 2002 NCAA Championship in the NIT Final. I might even drive to NYC to catch the final if that happened. Go Hoosiers, win one for my birthday.

Tonight the week of festivities begins with Rusted Root at the 9:30 Club. NCAA Tournament starts tomorrow with the Opening Game.

* Update - Upon further review, I'm picking North Carolina to win it all.
